Isle of May Outing Saturday, June 23, 2012 - 10:00

Hi all,

It's that time of year again; time to start planning my annual trip to the Isle of May (in the Firth of Forth). The trip promises 1,000s of spectacular seabird photo opportunities including large numbers of very close up; Razorbill, Guillemot, Puffin, Fulmar, Kittiwake, Gannet, Shag, Arctic Tern, Herring, Greater & Lesser Black-backed Gull, Eider etc etc as well as Seals, oh and a very quaint and colourful Anstruther Harbour with the best Scottish Chipper to get you all set for the journey home. Anyone interested in coming along to take some snaps?

Depending on numbers interested, I'll want to make a booking for the boat across or possibly charter our own boat early next week if at all possible. The boat return trip will cost in the region of £22-£25 each and depending on tide sh...ould allow us around 2-3hrs on the small island. The four dates I'm currently considering are;

Saturday 23rd June, sailing at 2.30pm

Sunday 24th June, sailing at 9.15am

Saturday 30th June, sailing at 9.30am

Sunday 1st July, sailing at 10.30am

The 2.30pm sailing on the 23rd is a bit late in the day, but if that's all I can get (the boat is very heavily booked just now due to it being the peak of the breeding bird season) then I'll go for it if folk are interested. We could always spend the morning around the harbour?

Anyway, get in touch with me at ( ) asap if you are interested, indicating all dates you are able to attend - the date with the most interest will be my priority when booking.

All the best

Practical Night 9 Wednesday, May 29, 2013 - 19:30

Wildlife photography at Fowlesheugh Cliffs led by Harry Scott. Also last date for Visions CC Exchange submissions.
Hi all,

I just thought I'd best give folks an idea of what's planned for this Wednesday, since we're attempting something a little bit different this week. We are going to visit the RSPB reserve of Fowlsheugh which hosts the largest concentration of nesting seabirds on the eastern Scottish coastline.  For a bit of background info you can visit their web site;

While there, I'd plan to point out and help you photograph various species of seabird including; Fulmar, Kittiwake, Guillemot, Razorbill, Puffin, Shag and a variety of gulls.  Some will be VERY close, while others might be low down on the cliff ledges, but all should be seen at least. If you have any concerns about cliffs/heights, do not fear, you don't have to go close to the edge to enjoy the seabird spectacle, the smell of guano or photograph the birds! There's also an alternative route which will provide a spectacular little waterfall should birdies not be your thing?

I plan to get to the reserve for around 6.30pm, so feel free to turn up any time after that? Parking your car in the small car park then following the footpath to the left (northwards) along the coast and you will soon come across us snappin away. I'd suggest you don’t wear your best cloths (I never do!), but wrap up warm in case there's a coastal breeze. Bring the biggest lens you have for some of the further away birds (I may have a Canon lens or two that folk can borrow), or a wide angle and tripod for some landscapes?

Can I please ask those who are thinking of coming along to drop me an email with a contact phone/mobile number asap please ( ) so I know who to look out for? Also, if the weather turns nasty I can then let you know if the visit is cancelled to save you the journey? If the weather does let us down, I will communicate with everyone as quickly and as best I can about my backup plan of meeting at the Aboyne Centre as usual for a wee presentation of Happy Hal and my visit to the Isle of May the other week – yep, heaps of Puffin pics AND a whole lot more!

Any queries, just get in touch?

All the best - Harry

Their presentation will cover all aspects of their stay on the island and will hopefully encourage some of you to accompany the 'dynamic duo' for a day trip to the Isle of May in 2-3 weeks time to see and photograph the islands amazing abundance of wildlife, including the 46,000 pairs of Puffins which should be busily feeding their chicks at that time?

Also, this is the last call for anyone wishing to take part in (or help with) our annual photographic show. This years show is to be held at the Bowling Club, next to the Victory Hall in the centre of Aboyne from 6-10th December. Currently Harry has received responses from David Hendry, Chris Bell, Jean Bell, Margaret Fraser, Geraldine McGowan, Bob Naylor, Ian Halliday & Ernie Jamieson but we need a few more folk to allow us to go ahead. Whether you wish to display just an image or two, occupy a whole board or want to help out without exhibiting, please contact Harry as soon as possible on the following email ( ) so that he can have a clear idea of who wished to be involved and can then make progress with planning and promoting the event?
